I mentioned last week, when I introduced Houston|Monthly (H|M), I would be creating Annual|Houston (A|H), its annual companion. Where H|M concentrates on monthly activities, A|H looks towards Houston’s essential annual events.
The Bayou City Art Festival is the perfect event to kick off this list. Held bi-annually in Downtown Houston and Memorial Park, the Bayou City Art Festival is one of my favorite events in Houston every year. It should come as no surprise as it has long been one of the links listed in my You Should Know section at the bottom right of Urban Houstonian.
I’ve been volunteering and attending the Downtown festival for a couple of years now. It wasn’t until this past Spring that I finally got the chance to attend the Memorial Park festival. Each festival has a unique personality. While I do lean towards the Downtown festival, there is something relaxing about strolling through Memorial Park looking at art.
Proceeds from the event benefit a number of Houston non-profit organizations including: Bering Omega Community Services, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, City ArtWorks, Downtown YMCA, Heritage Society, Houston Center for Photography,Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Lawndale Art Center, Multicultural Education & Counseling through the Arts (MECA), MFAH, Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH), Opera in the Heights, Orange Show, Several Dancers Core, Spay & Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP), Spacetaker and SPARK.
Another great aspect of the Bayou City Art Festival is the parties. Each event has its own fete that is a fantastic way to celebrate festival weekend. In Downtown there is the Art Heist, while Memorial Park throws Looking at Art. Both have become signature events for their respective festivals.
I am pleased to offer you a discount to this year’s Houdini Heist on Saturday night, October 8 at City Hall. Houdini’s Heist will feature magical acts, delectable bites and sorcerous cocktails. It is not often you get a chance to party on the steps of City Hall.
Use the magic word, specialguest10, to receive 10% off tickets to the event.
What a magical way to launch Annual|Houston!
